Labor to ban live exports if it wins government

Article image for Labor to ban live exports if it wins government

If Labor wins the next election it’ll move to end live sheep exports and transition into processed meats.

The live export trade returned to the spotlight after footage emerged of Australian sheep dying on ships bound for the Middle East.

Banning the trade would cost the industry in Western Australia up to $150 million.
RSPCA and Animals Australia have pledged $500,000 dollars each to assist farmers with phasing out live exports.

Andrew Bolt tells Chris Smith if there’s one thing government’s good at, it’s “shutting down things”.

“You see it with coal-fired power stations, they’re extremely good at shutting those things down.

“But they are very poor at creating the jobs that’ll follow.”

Andrew says the government isn’t in the “profit business”.

“They’re in the headline business and the grants business and things go ape when that happens.”
