Largest class action to ever take place in Australia is being launched against Uber
A Victorian class action against Uber has expanded to include cab drivers from NSW, Queensland and Western Australia.
Thousands of people are expected to join the class action over claims they lost out on business when the ride-sharing giant entered the market without legal approval in 2014.
Law firm Maurice Blackburn believes it could become the largest class action in Australian history and Uber may be forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation.
Lawyer Elizabeth O’Shea says hundreds of taxi operators, owners and drivers have suffered and are seeking damages.
“Our claim is that various Uber entities agreed to enter the market… and [Uber] didn’t have the have the relevant licenses, they didn’t comply with the relevant rules,” she tells Ross Greenwood.
“That caused harm to existing participants that were complying with all those rules.
“We think we can recover compensation for those people.”
