The heavy rain and flooding has claimed one life in Queensland after a vehicle became submerged on the Sunshine Coast.

A 60-year-old woman was found dead in floodwaters west of Eumundi.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service State Coordinator James Haig told Sofie Formica it illustrates why motorists need to use extra caution in the coming days.

“This event developed very rapidly overnight,” he said. “One thing we’d also really stress is this situation is not over.”

Details are still emerging of 17 flood rescues performed by emergency services overnight.

Two people were rescued at Mothar Mountain, south of Gympie at 1am this morning after they drove a car and caravan into water.

Swift services were also called to rescue a woman travelling from Gympie to Kin Kin.

She had reportedly been able to move to higher ground after water rose swiftly on Gap Road at Cedar Pocket around 10.20pm.

Crews received a third call around 1.15am after two people became stuck in flood waters along Cedar Pocket Road.

Responders haven’t been able to locate the car due to flooding and intend to recommence their search as soon as possible.

Storm chaser Justin Noonan told Neil Breen the coming days aren’t promising any relief from the rain.

“I really can’t stress this enough, this is actually a fairly significant situation,” Justin said.

“We could see very dangerous, life-threatening flash flooding anywhere from the southern Wide Bay to northern New South Wales.”
