A lawyer leading the charge for a ‘ridiculous’ loophole benefitting paedophiles to be closed has called for public backing.

Under current laws, convicted paedophiles are able to hide their assets in superannuation funds in order to avoid paying damages to their victims.

Senior Associate at Webster Lawyers, Andrew Carpenter, told Ray Hadley he’s been fighting for the loophole to be closed for years to no avail.

“When that happens, the Australian taxpayers are the ones to foot the bill for the sins of the offenders,” he said.

“Ever since I found out – about 2019, 2020 – I’ve been basically jumping up and down to anyone who will listen.

“Nothing’s happened; I’ve met with multiple politicians that all say, ‘Yep, we’re in support of this’ but don’t do anything.”
