Lloyd Clarke weighs in on coercive control laws in heart-wrenching interview
The father of murdered Hannah Clarke has voiced support for recommendations made in the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce report.
The taskforce has made 89 recommendations to the state government to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence.
Notably, it suggested coercive control be criminalised.
Lloyd Clarke’s daughter, Hannah, and his three grandchildren were fatally burned in a petrol fire by her estranged husband.
He told Sofie Formica he was never aware of coercive control until after Hannah’s death, but the behaviour pattern should have been a red flag.
“The report, we think, is very good,” he said. “There’s a lot of reforms, and there’s a lot of work to be done.
“I think Margaret McMurdo’s got it right by introducing it in stages, because everyone’s got to change.
“Coercive control is going to become a law – you can’t do that – so we need to have better relationships.”
