135 Queenslanders were recognised in this year’s Australia Day honours list, including many local, unknown heroes.

Among them is Barry Leech, who is a recipient of Order of the Medal of Australia, for his services to people with a disability.

Incredibly, he has made and fitted prosthetic limbs to more than 10,000 people.

“It’s an honour,” he said.

He told Sofie Formica it all started years ago in the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

First and foremost, he said helping children is among his greatest honours.

But there were two people who he remembers helping the most.
