Locals on Norfolk Island prepare for Cyclone Gabrielle
Residents on Norfolk Island are prepared for tropical Cyclone Gabrielle, which is expected to make landfall tomorrow.
Norfolk Island has been issued an orange cyclone alert and will likely go to red tomorrow.
The Category 3 tropical cyclone is tracking towards the island but likely to pass very close-by as a Category 2.
Destructive winds with gusts to 140 kilometres per hour are possible from tomorrow afternoon to Sunday morning.
Administrator of Norfolk Island, Eric Hutchinson, said they are prepared.
“These things are pretty difficult to predict, [the Bureau of Meteorology’s] tracking over the last few days has indicated the direction of the cyclone, and it’s proving to be that,” he told Neil Breen.
“It’s going to make landfall here on Norfolk Island sometime tomorrow with the strongest winds forecast to be around 1pm tomorrow but also extending right through to 2am on Sunday morning.”
