Lord Mayor’s push to ‘get on with it’ on Olympics infrastructure group
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has again called on the state government to establish the Olympic Games infrastructure agency, warning it’s time to get cracking before the 2023 Games.
It comes amid media reports the government is facing a huge blow-out to on the Gabba rebuild, initially touted for around $1 billion.
He said it’s time to establish the agency, and investigate how best to tackle the Gabba redevelopment.
“We looked at an alternative option to build the stadium where the Albion Park Raceway is, obviously it’s something we did a bit of work on,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.
“But the state government was determined to upgrade the Gabba, we wanted to be team players, we didn’t want a big fight in the lead-up to the city getting the Olympics, and so we fell into line and played as team players.
“It is a complex project, the Gabba is massively complex, we have got to get it right, I think the best way we can do that is get this Infrastructure Coordination Authority up and running as quickly as possible … still no plans for it, still not up and running.
“We need that work to be done sooner rather than later to get all the key stakeholders involved.”
He said it was “time we get on with it”.
