‘Lost opportunity’: David Littleproud’s message to the PM over Indigenous Voice
David Littleproud believes the PM will have a “lost opportunity” if he doesn’t give the details about a proposed Indigenous Voice to parliament.
Details about a proposed Indigenous Voice to parliament will not be known before a referendum on the issue.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has argued that he does not want a repeat of the failed 1999 republic referendum where people may have disagreed with one element within the proposed model and then were urged to vote no.
Already there are calls for more details about the Indigenous Voice, including from the Nationals Leader David Littleproud.
Mr Littleproud told Ray Hadley the Prime Minister has “good intentions” but needs to make sure he keeps the trust of the Australian people.
“This is an opportunity, I think, that could be lost if the Prime Minister doesn’t bring the Australian people into his trust that gives the details about how this will shift the dial,” he said.
“This is the important thing that we need to understand to make sure that Australians, when they’re going to tinker with their constitution, understand what they’re going to be left with and how it will operate and the safeguards that we put there to make sure that, ultimately, it gets back to the primary principle of making sure we change the lives [of Indigenous people].
“We need to make sure this is not a lost opportunity for Indigenous Australians.”
