Major change for pubs, clubs under smoking reform
The Queensland government has flagged a major crackdown on smoking laws.
The government is calling for public consultation on the major overhaul, which would include tightening licensing for retailers that sell cigarettes, banning people under 18 from selling them and outlawing smoking in car parks designated for school communities.
Under the proposal, pub and club operators would also have to prevent people from drinking in smoking areas if the laws become a reality.
Story Bridge Hotel publican Richard Deery cautiously welcomed the review.
“I do think we have got to always review it and have a look at it,” he told Scott Emerson.
“Everyone has rights, and individuals who don’t smoke have rights, individuals who do smoke have rights.”
