A major overhaul is on the way for Medicare, in a bid to make healthcare more accessible and affordable.

The Federal Government wants to give nurses and paramedics a greater role in delivering primary care, alongside GPs.

Bulk-billing practices are also increasingly difficult to find.

Health Minister Mark Butler says subsiding individual consultations through GPs is no longer fit for purpose and it needs modernising.

President of the Queensland Australian Medical Association, Dr Maria Boulton, shared her thoughts on what needs re-working.

“It is clear that the Medicare rebates are not where they should be,” she said.

She said there is also need for major reform, as Australians suffer with more chronic illnesses and mental health conditions.
