The Redlands Mayor has launched a petition requesting an appeal against the sentence of the teenager responsible for Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field’s deaths.

The 17-year-old was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis when he crashed a stolen car into the pregnant couple on Australia Day at Alexandra Hills last year.

Returning to the scene of the crash, Matthew’s father, Russell Field pleaded for legislation around youth crime to be reviewed.

“If the general public thinks six years is enough punishment for this individual, [they can] sit on their hands and do nothing,” he said.

“But if they don’t think that, get up, support the petition and make change.”
