The new boss of Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) has revealed he has offered to resign after receiving seven speeding fines in four weeks since moving to Australia.

All of the fines were on the same stretch of road on the M1 from Melbourne to Geelong, with the top speed of 115km/hr.

Dan Stephens apologised on Macquarie Radio, telling 3AW ‘s Neil Mitchell there is no defence for speeding.

“When a number of notices came in, immediately as I was made aware of that I contacted the board, and made them aware of my position,” he said.

“I believe if that made my position untenable then clearly I should do the honourable thing.

“I immediately flagged it to Vic Police and I will also be communicating to staff, to be absolutely clear, there is no justification for this.

“I take full responsibility for my actions, and I can only sincerely apologise which I do on behalf of the MFB and to all the residents of Melbourne and Victoria.

“There is no excuse. In this instance, my conduct falls a long way short.”

He admitted he was still adjusting to the speed limit after moving to Melbourne from the UK.

In one instance, he’s racked up three speeding fines in a day.

The MFB board has rejected his offer to resign.
