Milpera SHS welcomes seven Ukrainian refugees
A local state high school has welcomed seven Ukrainian refugees into the fold as war continues in Europe.
Milpera State High School in Chelmer is helping students get up to speed with their peers in an intensive English language course.
Principal Julie Peel told Sofie Formica the school has found students’ English abilities depend on where in Ukraine they lived.
“If you have lived in regional areas, … we find that you might need many weeks of an intensive English program but if you’ve come from a city area, it may be that you’ve already studied English.
“Some of the students have come to us and we’ve sent them directly on to high school.”
She said parents have wasted no time enrolling their children in Australian schools since arriving on visas.
“The single biggest thing that all families across the world want for their children is for them to be happy and to be involved in education, empowering them to go on and have great futures.
“They’re very keen to get their kids into school, normalise their routine, hope that they might make friends quickly and move on with their lives.”
