Mining industry blindsided by ‘damaging’ tax proposal
The gas and coal industry wants clarification on a potential new tax that representatives say could cost jobs but solve nothing.
The state’s Minerals Council is seeking details following reports the federal government will consider a temporary tax on producers in an effort to curb soaring prices.
NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee told Ray Hadley it’s a terrible proposal, which no one in the industry has been consulted on.
“This will hurt mining communities in NSW, especially in the Hunter Valley,” he said. “It’s going to damage our reputation.
“Higher taxes don’t lead to lower energy prices. It’s a pretty basic logic.”
