A former child safety officer has lifted the lid on major issues within Queensland’s child safety system.

The whistleblower reported incidents where children were allegedly sent back to abusive parents and claimed a child safety officer was supplying drugs to clients.

Concerningly, they also told the Townsville Bulletin: “I’ve heard child safety officers tell carers not to report crimes because of the impact it could have on the child”.

Shadow Minister for Child Protection Amanda Camm told Neil Breen the failures point to “a culture of cover-ups”.

“What we’ve seen in these reports is there was a failing of a thorough investigation, that these children were taken out of safe, nurturing, loving foster homes and put back at risk.

“That is failing these children.”

Ms Camm accused Minister for Children and Youth Justice Leanne Linard of hiding behind ‘privacy’.

“The privacy of a child … should not come before the safety and protection of a child.”
