Minister promises reform after release of damning environment scorecard
Australia’s environmental laws will likely be strengthened under the Albanese government, following the release of a damning new report.
A five-yearly report released Tuesday morning has painted a damning picture of the nation’s ecosystems, caused by climate change, mining, pollution, invasive species and habitat loss.
The report, which describes Australia’s environment as “poor and deteriorating”, was initially handed to the Morrison government in December last year but was held back from release by former environment minister Sussan Ley ahead of the election.
Newly-minted Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek is vowing to take action and “reform our laws” in light of the report’s findings.
Speaking at the National Press Club today, Ms Plibersek said the national estate will be expanded as part of a plan to repair environmental damage.
“Our government will set a goal of protecting 30 per cent of our land and 30 per cent of our oceans by 2030.
“We’ll explore the creation of national parks and marine protected areas, including by pursuing East Antarctic Marine Park.”
