The federal government has rejected claims the government failed in its duty to stop a security agreement between China and the Solomon Islands which could bring Chinese military bases to Australia’s doorstep.

There are fears it could mean Chinese warships and a greater military presence in the region within weeks, according to a new report.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been accused of an abject failure of leadership for not attempting to halt the agreement.

Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne says the government has concerns that the security agreement was not signed transparently.

“We’ve been very clear in expressing our concerns and doing so respectfully to the Solomon Islands and directly to China.”

Peter Psaltis questioned if the Minister regretted not going to the Solomon Islands before the deal was inked.
