A senior minister is pushing for nationwide on-the-spot fines of $1000 for drivers caught using their mobile phones.

QLD Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey says if it’s the driver’s second mobile phone offence then a loss of license should apply.

Minister Bailey tells Ray Hadley he is determined to introduce tougher penalties.

“I’ve proposed a get-tough approach to it because we’re still seeing very high levels of people using their phone while driving.

“I think everybody’s felt their lives threatened at one point by driver distraction and that’s the same right across the country.

“I’ve been heartened by the discussion I’ve had with ministers in other jurisdictions and I’m hopeful… a national approach is what we need.”
