Neil Breen, Richard Marles spar over PM’s flood funding timeline
Federal Labor’s Deputy Leader has blasted the Prime Minister for taking weeks to agree to a flood support package.
Scott Morrison yesterday agreed to jointly fund a state relief plan that would help homeowners retrofit or raise their home or resell their property to the government.
The federal government had refused to share the cost just days before.
Richard Marles slammed the Mr Morrison for taking three weeks “to come to the party”.
“But [he’d] already come to the party,” Neil Breen said.
“The feds came to the party with $379 million of direct payments into people’s bank accounts, a commitment for $550 million to go to clubs and all of these grants going on, businesses as well.
“While at the same time, the Queensland government belatedly had to admit on my show yesterday that they’d only had $280 million out the door!”
Mr Marles didn’t fold on his criticism of Mr Morrison, insisting the Prime Minister had been “dragged kicking and screaming”.
“That money should’ve been provided three weeks ago.
“This is the issue with Scott Morrison: he was slow to act during the bushfires, slow to act on the rollout of the vaccine, he’s been slow to act when it comes to dealing with the impact of the floods.”
