Neil Breen’s ‘contempt’ for ‘cowering’ government as students lose to unions again

Neil Breen is fed up with Queensland’s ministers “cowering” at unions after an extra school week was axed.

Education Minister Grace Grace yesterday announced a plan to extend the school year to compensate for a later start had been abandoned.

The standard curriculum will instead be condensed into a shorter year.

Neil says it’s another example of the state government rolling over on its policy to appease unions.

“I’m going to try and contain my contempt here, and it’s not contempt for teachers…

“[The Queensland Teachers’ Union] immediately put the government on notice and immediately, the government cowered.”

He added it’s not the first time students’ interests have been overlooked.

“I now want to take you back to the decision last year by the state government to move the Exhibition Holiday.

“The date chosen … made for a six-day weekend for members of the Electrical Trades Union, the CFMEU and the Plumbers’ Union.

“But on the Friday of the public holiday, there were meant to be the first HSC exams for Year 12 students.

“Those exams had to be scrapped and moved. At no point did Grace Grace in her role in Cabinet try and look after students.”
