There’s a world-first trial underway lead by researchers in Melbourne and Sydney that could mean a reduction of insulin injections needed to treat advanced Type 2 diabetes.

Professor Elif Ekinci from the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes University of Melbourne says Australia is leading the charge.

“It’s really using that concept of intestinal cellular regeneration which is a really a new concept in procedural medicine which involves regeneration of the lining of the duodenum,” she told Sofie Formica.

It involves an electrical pulse to potentially regenerate cells in the first part of the intestine.
