‘Nightmare’ COVID-19 rules leave Gympie rodeo roped in red tape
The Gympie Show Society has been forced to postpone its fundraiser rodeo indefinitely due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The event, which should have gone ahead this weekend, was due to be held on state-government owned showgrounds.
But organisers hit a snag with a rule which required them to check everyone coming through the gates is fully vaccinated.
Gympie Show Society Vice President Warren Smith told Neil Breen “logistically, it’s a nightmare”.
The rule doesn’t seem to extend to schoolgrounds, however, as a nearby town was able to have its show at its local school after-hours.
“It became a little murkier yesterday, Neil,” Mr Smith said.
“We received a communiqué from the public health unit at Sunshine Coast Health and they’ve basically said if we’re holding a community event, we can throw the gates open to anybody.
“[But] if we’ve got paying people coming in, they can only be double vaxxed.”
