Brisbane-Irishman and race horse owner Noel Greenhalgh was remarkably calm before Gold Trip ran in the Melbourne Cup yesterday.

It was during the race that he felt the adrenaline pumping.

Mr Greenhalgh, a part-owner in Gold Trip, told Peter Psaltis he believed Gold Trip would run well, but there was no huge expectation for him to win.

“To be honest with you in the run I was beyond, I was filthy,” he said on Monday’s Wide World of Sports.

“The fact that he was three wide, well back … I just find it really difficult when a horse is in that position.

“He was the same position in the Caulfield Cup.

“The race was run at a genuine pace, and to be honest with you [jockey Mark Zahra] was the ultimate professional, he knew what he had under him.”

The Brisbane fruit and vegetable businessman spoke to Gary, Laurel and Mark this morning and told them about the moment he called his daughter, Channel 7 European correspondent Sarah Greenhalgh, to tell her about the win.

“Straight after the race we did ring her and wake her up at 3.30am London time, and she said ‘Dad when I saw the phone ringing I knew it was going to be something really good, I knew it was going to be that you won!”

He also joked his interview yesterday with the 4BC Breakfast team may have played a part.

“Maybe there was a bit of an omen in you guys talking to us, hopefully next year we will be back to defend the crown and maybe we have got to do more of this sort of stuff!”
