A volunteer firefighter has tragically been killed as seven dangerous fires continue to burn across New South Wales.

28-year-old Samuel McPaul died on Monday afternoon while fighting the Green Valley blaze at Jingellic in southern NSW.

In what’s been described by firefighters as a “truly horrific” freak wind event, a truck containing three men rolled when it was lifted off the ground by extreme winds.

Mr McPaul died at the scene. His wife Megan is expecting their first child in May.

A second passenger, a 39-year-old man, was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

The 52-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries.

NSW RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers tells Mark Levy it was a “freak accident”.

“The 12-tonne truck is on level, flat ground and they’re firefighting from the back of that truck… and basically the truck’s been flipped by the wind.

“Never seen anything like it before and obviously I hope I never do again.”
