NT authorities accused of ‘cleaning up’ ahead of PM’s arrival
The Prime Minister has touched down in Alice Springs as pressure grows for him to tackle a crime wave in the town.
Anthony Albanese will meet with Aboriginal leaders in the remote town after a weeks-long push for him to visit.
4BC political reporter Zac de Silva told Sofie Formica there are reports that young troublemakers have been bussed out of town before the Prime Minister’s arrival.
“Given it’s such a remote community, it is hard to confirm details without being there,” he said. “We did hear from a local businessman earlier, who said exactly that.
“He said they do this every time a politician … comes to town, the young people who are often in the CBD causing trouble … are bussed out and they’re taken to community halls and various different places out of the town.”
“I do need to stress, that’s just what we’ve heard from people in the town, it’s not something we can confirm ourselves.”
Opposition leader Peter Dutton says something must be done to tackle alcohol-fuelled crime in Alice Springs and has called for a return to booze bans.
But the Northern Territory’s police commissioner Jamie Chalker told the ABC any solution needs to look at the underlying causes of the uptick in crime.

Sky News reporter Matt Cunningham said the community is “begging” for something to be done.
“This is a town that has really been just engulfed by a crime crisis, I know that’s a cliche … but it’s hard to call it anything else,” he told Neil Breen.
He said commercial break-ins are up 60 per cent in the past year, domestic violence incidents are up 50 per cent and car theft is up 32 per cent.
“We see these issues every day,” he said.
“I think at some level, people in the Northern Territory probably think how on earth can you guys be having this lengthy conversation about this issue [The Voice to parliament] when these things are going on and no one wants to seem to talk about it?” he said.
