A record amount of people are enrolled to vote in the federal election.

Over 16 million people, 96.8 per cent of the eligible voting population, are expected to vote at the May 18 election.

Pre-polling will open on Monday, April 29 for those who are unable to vote on the day.

Australian Electoral Commission spokesperson Phil Diak tells Ross Greenwood the number of people enrolled is “probably unmatched anywhere in the world”.

“We’ve got over 400,000 18 and 19-year-olds enrolled and of course none of them voted in 2016.”

He says nearly 100,000 people enrolled in the last week before the roll closed.
