Parents are being urged to collect their children from schools in some regions as soon as possible, with a return to severe weather forecast for this afternoon.

Areas from Moreton Bay to Bundaberg will be most in the firing line this afternoon.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said children at schools in the northern Moreton Bay region, Sunshine Coast, Gympie and from Wide Bay to Bundaberg should be picked up.

Schools that can safely open tomorrow will only do so for children of essential workers, with other students urged to stay at home.

“In addition to early collections in those areas today, tomorrow schools across the entire south east region will only be open for children of essential workers,” Education Minister Grace Grace said.

“However, the message is stay off the roads and stay at home unless you really need to be out.”

She told Sofie Formica the safety of children is the highest priority.

“According to the weather bureau, it’s going to be a very nasty day tomorrow and I think the police, emergency services really want to ensure we stay off the road.”
