Patient waits 11 days for surgery on broken leg at regional QLD hospital
A young motorbike rider who suffered a broken leg had to wait 11 days for surgery in a regional Queensland hospital.
Chaime Bartholdt, 23, waited days to get surgery on his leg after a motorbike accident ended up in a broken tibia.
The Rockhampton Base Hospital had him on their priority list but everytime he was about to go into theatre, it would be postponed.
“Every time they said I was going to have surgery I’d have to fast from 12am that night and not eat or drink or anything, and then they’d get to a ridiculous hour in the afternoon, and they’d cancel it,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.
Last night he finally had surgery.
Neil said it was another example of a system under pressure.
“These are the priorities we need to look at here,” he said.
“We can’t have the people of Queensland lying around in hospital waiting 11 days for emergency surgery on a leg that even after the surgery needs 4 months recovery.
“This is a major injury here.”
