Queensland police have been pleasantly surprised with the number of hooning reports submitted by every day Queenslanders sick of the illegal activity plaguing their streets.

Police Minister Mark Ryan unveiled a world-first reporting network that gives people the chance to upload footage captured of hoons on their phones, CCTV or dashcams.

It’s a world-first system, and it’s been quietly live for six weeks.

So far around 4000 reports of hooning have been made, including 1600 individual pieces of footage.

Assistant chief superintendent of road and policing, Ray Rohweder, says police have been happy with the new system.

“People are sick of it, and this is a great way to not have the police turn up tot your door, you simply get onto this site … and you get instructions there to upload your video.”

He says there’s “no way in the world” they expected so many reports of hoons.

“We are ready, we are prepared, we’ve got the officers ready to act, we have now been provided with all of the tools to crack down on this menace.”
