People on the JobSeeker unemployment benefit will get an extra $25 a week, in a permanent increased planned by the federal government.

The increase is expected to take effect after the current coronavirus supplement of $150 a fortnight ends on March 31.

The unemployment payment has not been increased in real terms since the 1990s, with the pre-pandemic rate at $565 a fortnight.
