Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says understands why shadow minister for Indigenous Australians Julian Lesser quit the frontbench over his party’s position on the Voice to parliament.

Dutton confirmed the Liberal party will oppose the Voice, saying Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was “seeking to divide the country” with the Constitutional change.

“He’s worked on this issue for a long time, and his point-of-view now is at odds with the overwhelming majority … within the Liberal Party party room who don’t support the Voice, and that was the basis on which he made his decision today.”

The Opposition Leader was also asked about the scrapping of tax offsets and the appeal of Jack Beasley’s killer
