ACCC report sparks questions surrounding how suppliers and consumers can be protected
With the ACCC handing down its report regarding the major supermarkets, questions are being asked about how customers and suppliers can be protected after they were cleared of price-gouging.
ACCC deputy chair Mick Keogh says the suppliers are at a “significant disadvantage” bargaining with the supermarkets.
“It’s interesting that both the major retailers in their submissions acknowledged the deficiencies in some of the market arrangements where they obtain their fresh produce,” he told 4BC Afternoons.
He also defended ACCC’s current powers surrounding enforcement.
“Of course, it’s not always as evident where there is a breach, for example, a lot of consumers would say ‘Oh we think there has been price gouging by the major supermarkets.’ Well, there’s no actual law against price-gouging,” he added.
“And we haven’t called for it because it’s such a complex area”.
