Astonishing consequences of closing the Liddell power station in 2022
This is why closing Liddell is such a bad idea:
1. To replace the 2,000 megawatt Liddell power station would require 69 Nyngans, a total of 93 million solar panels costing 20 billion, plus the cost of additional transmission lines and backup for when the sun is not shining.
2. That would occupy an area of over 17,000 hectares equivalent to 28 Melbourne CBDs.
3. Wind energy provided 0.46 per cent of global energy consumption in 2014, which is zero when rounded to the nearest whole number.
4. Solar and tide provided 0.35 of a per cent.
