Bargaining power returns to the new car market

DAVID BERTHON

Some major car brands are once again starting to stockpile new cars after
several years of delivery delays brought on by the global pandemic. Whilst some
high demand models remain in short supply with delayed deliveries many dealers
are now holding good levels of stock which has brought bargaining power back
into the market and if a car is on the showroom floor you should be able to
haggle a good deal. However, Toyota still has significant delays ranging from six
months to two years on certain models. Whilst maintaining market leadership its
sales reflect a dip of over 20 per cent on the same time last year. Ford Kia and
Hyundai also have wait times ranging from three to nine months on some popular
models while Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Skoda now have good
stocks with little delay in delivery. I’m David Berthon
