Detectives launched a multiagency strike force in 2022, focused on Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic to probe possible match-fixing on two occasions.

Deputy Investigations Editor, Nick McKenzie told Dean Miller on 4BC Summer Breakfast, “There was not enough evidence to sustain charges despite the high level of suspicion.”

“The suspected associates of Tomic who laid bets were betting on Tomic to lose matches and sets in instances where he was a ‘major underdog’, so to actually get money from such bets you’d have to bet a lot,” McKenzie said.

“The wins that these suspect gamblers would have got if the bets had been paid out were between $10,000 and $180,000 so we’re talking about high-level bets on outcomes which raised significant suspicions,” McKenzie continued.
