Clean Clothes, Warm Conversations: Orange Sky Is Changing Lives on the Road

Phil O'Neil

Phil chats with Emma Young, Chief Corporate Services Officer at Orange Sky—the world’s first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

Founded in 2014 by two 20-year-old mates, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett, Orange Sky began in a Brisbane garage when they converted an old van into a mobile laundry with just a couple of machines and a generator.

What started as a simple idea to provide clean clothes quickly became something more. After meeting their first friend, Geordan, they shared a conversation while waiting for the laundry to finish—and realized the real power of connection through conversation. Since then, Orange Sky has grown into a vital support network across Australia.
