Many conservatives, while opposing progressive overreach on hate speech laws, apply double standards by supporting Peter Dutton’s push for strict penalties and mandatory jail time for certain speech.
While outrage over attacks on the Jewish community is understandable, citizens should still be free to criticize Israel or support Palestinian rights without being labeled antisemitic.
As with past debates on Islamic extremism, the solution is not to erode civil liberties or create a more censorious society.
