A study by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) reveals a significant rise in drug driving charges in NSW, with cases increasing by 836% from 1,409 in 2014 to 13,815 in 2023.

The surge is attributed to two factors: the expansion of the Mobile Drug Testing (MDT) program, increasing tests from 20,000 to 156,000 annually, and a rise in detection rates, especially among repeat offenders.

However, there’s no evidence linking the trend to changes in drug use or behavior.
