Experts warn against social media trend promoting sunburn for tan lines

Sofie Formica

Influencers have been flaunting their “tanning routines” on social media, and the trend has been gaining momentum among Generation Z.

The alarming hashtag “#sunburnttanlines” has gained more than 200 million views on TikTok, sparking calls from experts to end the trend.

Cancer Council Queensland Head of Prevention and Early Detection, Sharyn Chin Fat told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, “It is a dangerous trend…While ever we have a tanning culture in Australia, we’re going to increase our risk of skin cancer and we will continue to be, unfortunately, the skin cancer capital of the world.”

“I think the important thing is that let’s own the skin we’re in. So own our tone, you know, like if we’re fair, that’s OK. You don’t need to have a tan to be attractive,” Ms Chin Fat continued.
