Fears for staff raised after shopping centre stabbing attack

Shane Doherty

On Monday afternoon, a 13-year-old boy allegedly stabbed a woman in Coles at the Yamanto Central Shopping Centre.

The latest attack is raising concerns over safety in shopping centres following the deaths of Vyleen White and six people at Bondi Junction.

Queensland Secretary of SDA Justin Power told Shane Doherty on Summer Drive, “Our own statistics from our membership shows that the level of physical abuse towards retail employees has risen.”

“We have had a number of measures introduced in Queensland in the last 12 months to try and curb some of that abuse…There’s another few measures that we’d like to see, for example, reintroducing the police beats into shopping centres or increasing levels of staffing where they are,” Mr Power continued.
