Fishing industry urges government to fulfill pledge on seafood origin labels

The fishing industry is concerned the Albanese government has overlooked a pledge to make all hospitality venues display the origin of the seafood on their menus.

The ‘country of origin’ practice was originally set to begin in July, as the federal election approaches, Industry Minister Ed Husic is under pressure to act quickly and deliver on the promise.

CEO of the Seafood Industry Association, Veronica Papacosta told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, “At the moment we import 64% of the seafood that we consume in Australia.”

“Australians need to be able to decide which one they choose. They need to be able to tell which one. So when you walk into a restaurant, pub or club, it’s not on the menu, it’s in your retail shop, but not in your food service venues. And that’s been the push,” Ms Papacosta continued.
