Francis Birtles epic 1927 drive from London to Melbourne to be re-enacted next year by the Daily Telegraphs cartoonist Warren Brown

David Berthon

By any measure the feats of Australian adventurer Francis Birtles early last
century were incredible. – the first person to ride a push bike from Fremantle to
Melbourne and in 1910 riding around Australia and living at times with indigenous
Australians along the way – his first motoring exploit, the East-West Crossing of
Australia in 1912 in a 1-cylinder Brush run-about. But it was his 1927 epic journey
from London to Melbourne in a 14HP Bean car that captivated the nation. An
eight-month journey of survival over some 26,000 kilometres. This week, the Daily
Telegraph Cartoonist Warren Brown announced he was re-enacting Birtles
incredible journey next year in a similar 1925 14HP Bean. The charismatic Brown
joined on the trip by the Editor at Large at the Daily Telegraph Matthew Benns so
we’ll be able to follow the duo’s demanding adventures along the way each day.
