From the Frontline to the Lifeline: Former Cop Is Changing Shift Work for Good
Phil is joined by Roger Sutherland, a 40-year veteran of Victoria Police who knows firsthand the toll shift work takes—missed family moments, sleepless nights, and the grind of burnout.
Now retired, Roger has created The Shift Workers Collective, a 24/7 online community offering real support for shift workers, especially those in health, emergency services, and frontline roles.
“Shift workers are sick of doing it alone. They deserve better support, better tools, and someone who truly understands,” Roger says.
Backed by lived experience, Roger delivers practical, evidence-based advice on sleep, nutrition, work-life balance, and mental health—cutting through the generic noise that doesn’t fit the reality of shift work. He also hosts A Healthy Shift podcast, appears regularly on 3AW, and has supported thousands through coaching and speaking.
Launched at a time of rising burnout and frontline worker shortages, The Shift Workers Collective is built by a shift worker, for shift workers—and it’s just getting started.
