FULL SHOW: Weekends with Carla Bignasca (Filling in for Peter Fegan) – Sunday, 30th June 2024

Carla Bignasca

On the show: Carla is back to round up your weekend. First up, new national police data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has captured crime victim numbers for 2023 and sadly it shows that Queensland is Australia’s crime capital. Carla asks why we are seeing such high levels of offending and how can we stop it plus we hear your feedback.

Sky News Australia host, commentator and “cigar loving family man”, Paul Murray, joins Carla for the Sunday Breakdown. From the return of Julian Assange, Ben Roberts-Smith being awarded with a commemorative medal by Buckingham Palace and the first of two US presidential debates; we hear Paul’s take on these hot-button issues.

The debate about the 50c public transport fares continues, with many worrying about the current capacity of our cities public transport system as well as its potential to be a political football. Deputy Director of the Griffith University’s Cities Research Institute, Matthew Burke, joins Carla to discuss this in more detail and what he thinks will come from this 6-month trial.

In Local issues today, a revamped and mandatory code of conduct was announced which has upped the penalties for Australia’s big supermarkets if they breach. CEO of the Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers Rachel Chambers joins the show to talk through this announcement and if the protections for suppliers are strong enough.

If you were watching A Current Affair on Friday night, you would’ve caught the incredible story of 8-year-old Rosalie jumping into action – calling emergency services after her mum Telani suffered a medical emergency at home. Rosalie ultimately saved her mum’s life. The EMD who took the call, Kylie, couldn’t have been more surprised or proud, and she calls in to tell Carla all about the incident and the importance of having conversations with young family members and children on what to do in these situations.

Off the back of last week’s discovery about the SEQLD origins of the humble Lamington, Carla chats with food historian Dr Lauren Samuelsson who tells us more about her role and Carla gets confirmation once and for all about the origins of the lamington.

Finally, 4BC Sports Reporter Sam Leckie provides an extensive update of the weekend action and we look ahead to the coming week with your long-range weather forecast.
