FULL SHOW: Weekends with Peter Fegan – Sunday, 8th September 2024

Peter Fegan

On the show: Feegs is back to round out your weekend and responds to Premier Steven Miles’ comments that because the media are “addicted” to CCTV footage, it makes it harder for the government to come up against. We also hear more about a growing number of police beats shutting down across the state, and the calls from crime victims’ families to re-open them in response to rising incidents.

Today the LNP has also made a big announcement: the introduction of a LNP announces Public Child Sex Offender Register. To be known as ‘Daniel’s Law’, in memory of Daniel Morcombe, the LNP have pledged to establish a new three-tiered register to protect QLD children from sex offenders if elected. This follows LNP’s $373 million Safer Children, Safer Communities policy. LNP leader David Crisafulli joins Feegs to talk more about this, and also touches on the recent financial woes of the new Star Casino.

It’s been a big week politically. For the Sunday Breakdown, Feegs is joined by Leader of the Nationals Party, David Littleproud. From the Electrical Trades Union preparing to wage an all-out war against Peter Dutton’s plan for nuclear power ahead of the next federal election, to  Premier Jacinta Allen’s threats that she will “get tough” on former CFMEU boss John Setka; David gives his insights into the big issues.

In Local issues today: Homelessness is a serious issue in Queensland, with around 10,000 people currently sleeping rough. Enter Simon Rowe and The Sleepbus: an initiative that is helping address this by providing safe, secure overnight accommodation in sleeping pods on a bus. Simon joins Feegs to talk about this initiative that offers immediate support for those in need, and his hopes for the future.

Elsewhere on the show: the world’s most popular fruit, the Cavendish Banana, is facing extinction due to a deadly fungus known as the ‘Panama’ disease. Professor James Dale and his team at QUT may have found a solution in the form of genetically modified bananas – and Professor Dale joins Feegs to explain this new advancement.

For our Midday chat – Feegs shares an incredible story recorded earlier this week. Brian Clarke is one of only four people to escape from the South Tower during the 2001 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York City. With the 23rd anniversary of the attacks coming up this week, Brian joins Feegs to talk us through that day, the impact it has had and where he finds himself today.

PLUS: Nine News Sports Reporter Jacob Funk provides an extensive update on the weekend action, and we look ahead to the coming week with your long-range weather forecast.
