Government urged to look at road user charge
It’s forecast that by 2037 half of all cars on Australian roads will be electric only vehicles.
Because those owners won’t buy petrol they won’t pay fuel excise which is designed to help the Commonwealth pay for the nation’s roads and transport infrastructure.
It threatens to blow a major hole in the Federal Government’s finances and is leading to calls for the introduction of road user charge.
The RACQ’s head of public policy Dr Rebecca Michael tells Mark the difficulty will be designing a system that is fair to everyone.
