International Space Week & Australia’s involvement in the space programme

Clinton Maynard

As we move into International World Space Week, Luke speaks with Glen Nagle from CSIRO/NASA’s Deep Space Tracking Station about Australia’s involvement in the space programme.

International World Space Week is an international week celebrated every year from October 4 to 10 in nearly 100 countries across the globe.  It is the largest space event yet, put in place to celebrate the benefits of science and technology to human society.

Mr Nagle cherishes his front-row view of monumental moments in space exploration for its transformative perspective and practical contributions. He believes that our past achievements in space demonstrate our ability to confront major challenges.

He recounts a memorable encounter when Neil Armstrong backstage at an event. They knelt together as Armstrong perused a book containing profiles of space explorers.  Armstrong graciously signed a relevant photograph in the book, an uncommon gesture.
