Male purpose is the key to ending domestic violence
Bill Woods is joined by Dr Tanveer Ahmed, Psychiatrist and social commentator, who suggests that male purpose is the key to ending domestic violence.
“The government’s pledge to ‘end domestic violence within a generation’ in part through encouraging healthy masculinities, is a positive step, but should occur in parallel with fostering a culture that doesn’t raise boys with a sense of shame”, says Dr Ahmed.
“Maleness shouldn’t be cast as one of the ‘Original Sins’.”
“There are broader economic/social challenges too in an economy where there are fewer manual jobs. Men are struggling more to make the necessary shifts in finding purpose when the traditional ones of provider and protector are less available.”
“In an economy where jobs are moving more to caring, health and disability, it’s important to address these macroshifts in any attempt to stamp out domestic violence and sexual harassment.”
