Driving Mercedes-Benz fifth generation C-Class C300 sedan today – $15,100
dearer to the old series at $90,400 but this is a totally new car with new high-
grade underpinnings and technology that really sets it apart. Built for our market
in South Africa it sits on a 25mm longer wheelbase, offers more rear knee and
shoulder room in a body that now features the previously optional AMG line
exterior and interior package and it’s all class. A large floating infotainment
screen set low is a real high point. Over the entry C200 the C300 offers a larger
2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology linked to a nine-
speed automatic plus a stack more driver assist technology. Five different drive
modes, a fully adaptive suspension on 19-inch alloys with 35-series tyres that
provide a somewhat taut yet acceptable ride. Two disappointments, the lack of a
spare wheel of any sort, with our current potholed roads always a concern while
road noise on some course surfaces can get a little raucous. Mercedes-Benz
make the point the C300 is skewed for refined comfort over sports performance,
and it fits this bill admirably. Yes, it now costs significantly more but new
technology takes it to a new level. Economy; 7.5L/100. Warranty: five-
